Bengali cuisine is a perfect blend of cuisine from West Bengal and traditional techniques used in erstwhile East Bengal, now Bangladesh. It is known for its flavours, use of spices, and a variety of desserts. Bengalis are typified as “Mache Bhaate Bangali” which literally translates into Bengalis are incomplete without fish and rice. Indeed, it is often said that we, Bengalis, have a fetish for art and food.
Being an avid traveller, I realised food is a common factor that creates bonds between people and melts their hearts. During a trip to Myanmar, we stayed in a service apartment with a basic kitchenette. I remember cooking a 6-course Bengali meal for 7 of my guests coming from a diverse background. Cooking with veggies from a local market and using spices which I carried from Kolkata, I was successful and content in satiating their appetite
Popularly known as the cultural capital of India, Kolkata is rich in heritage and culture which is preserved till today. Food is regarded as an integral part of culture and Kolkata is well-known for sweets like Rasgulla and Sandesh all over the world. Once you enter my beautiful home, you can relax for a while and enjoy a refreshing Lebu Shorbet. We will then head towards the kitchen and start the home-based cooking class. I will teach you how to make Begun Bhaja which are the local fritters and Aloo Posto where potato cubes are sautéed in poppy seed paste and cooked to perfection. I will be glad to share some secret tips which you can use back home to prepare these dishes. Once we are done with both the dishes, we will take steps towards the dining area where I will serve you the authentic Bengali meal.
The entire experience will last for about 2-3 hours.
Please Note - This is not a professional cooking class but rather an opportunity to cook and dine with a local home-chef. The experience will be as much about the stories around the food and local culture, as it would be about the meal itself.
